RHIC Program
The relativistic heavy ion and intermediate energy physics group has a research program focused on the Solenoidal Tracker At RHIC (STAR) experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory. We study Quantum ChromoDynamics (QCD) matter at extreme high temperature and high energy density and investigate properties of the Quark Gluon Plasma in nucleus-nucleus collisions. Using polarized p+p collisions we measure the gluon spin structure function of the proton. Currently we are analyzing data from the STAR experiment, commissioning a Time-of-Flight detector, and preparing for a new Heavy Flavor Tracker (HFT) proposal. We provide opportunities and facilities for students to work on physics analysis of d+Au data from the year 2008 run and Monte Carlo simulation for HFT proposal.
